Physio-Therapy

Physiotherapy consists of many different types of treatment.( ice, muscle stimulation, ultrasound, stretching, heat, infrared, diathermy, strength training and neuro-musculo re-education)  Physiotherapy treatments are very effective in reducing the symptoms of - pain, inflammation, muscle spasms, adhesions, trigger points, edema etc.. that are usually associated with and complicate most musculoskeletal complaints.

Without some form of rehab, recovery from an injury or long-term spinal problem can take longer to achieve. The combined effectiveness of chiropractic, physio-therapy and exercise rehabilitation can help improve motion, increase muscle strength, enhance coordination and balance and  prevent your original health problem from returning again and again.

All of our patients receive a set of simple exercises they can perform, while some may require the use of specialized equipment to isolate or strengthen and enhance the stability of the spine.

The  different types of exercise are divided into three groups.

  1. Active range of motion are those that are designed to stretch muscles that have become shortened and are tight.
  2. Gentle strengthening exercise are designed to increase endurance of the muscle or the ability for that muscle to keep working without getting tired.
  3. Resistive exercises are aimed at increasing strength.

Usually this type of treatment allows a greater gap between treatment sessions as the healing process is expedited.  Some injuries however, like car accidents, work, or sports injuries, may require a more initial intensive form of treatment. Regardless of how you choose, these exercises may be done at home, in the gym, or in the within our office's rehabilitation suite.

All in all, good physical fitness is one one of the best ways to reduce the factors that lead to spinal and extremity injuries, to minimize damage if an injury occurs, to speed recovery time and to protect facet joints, discs and ligaments.

Staying physically fit provides you with muscle strength, endurance and  flexibility that will hold up to both work and play demands.  These are essential to avoiding injuries. Without them, injuries are more severe, slower to recover and prone to re-injury.

Rehabilitation, exercise and fitness are good for the body and mind.  It protects you from injury and emotional stress.  It promotes relaxation, enhancing sleep and tissue repair. And  it is certainly worth the effort!

Chiropractors began using physiotherapy treatments in conjunction with spinal manipulation and discovered that patients symptoms subsided much quicker, and were able to return to work and their normal daily activities much sooner. Working closely with your doctor, you will learn how to recognize the physical limitations imposed by your injury.

You'll achieve a maximum level of function while gaining knowledge of how to avoid repeat injuries along the way. We'll even help you maintain your progress through the design of a customized home exercise program. There are 3 major types of rehabilitation, water therapy, gym rehab, and work conditioning.

The first step in the recovery process is a comprehensive patient evaluation. Upon initial consultation, you will receive a personal and complete orthopedic and neurological exam. Through a combination of specific tests and measurements and an open dialogue with you, the doctor is able to develop a treatment plan and goals tailored to your individual needs.

Water Therapy

Depending upon the nature of your treatment, you may be able to realize significant benefits from aquatic therapy. When the body, or simply the injury site, is immersed in water, a certain level of buoyancy is achieved. In this way, aquatic therapy provides your body with additional support and comfort, relieving physical stress and increasing your flexibility for a faster total recovery.

Gym Rehabilitation

Alone or in combination with aquatic therapy, gym rehabilitation helps you to increase overall strength, endurance, and cardiovascular capacity. These programs include:

Work Conditioning

If the proper healing of your injuring is affected by normal daily activities necessary to perform your job, you may require additional therapy following completion of the land rehabilitation phase of your treatment. Work conditioning simulates the activities of your day-to-day job responsibilities and helps the injured area of your body respond positively to meet the physical needs of your occupation by improving your stamina, strength, mobility and endurance.

It is best described as an "aggressive" therapy program of strengthening and aerobic exercises. Work conditioning allows you to return to work faster, armed with the knowledge of how to properly perform your daily tasks without re-injuring the affected area of your body.
